I've been doing some work on catching up with the site over the holidays and I came across a bit of a rant in the forums from what I can only guess is an optician or the mom of an optician.

Here it is:

Free advice? Bad advice.

If you only wear glasses at night, if you only use glasses for a computer or you can buy your glasses from walgreens then by all means buy them online. But if it's a prescription, for the love of god, get it filled by someone who is knowledgeable about the trade. If you don't heed this advice also do us a favor and don't bother going to a local optician to have your frames fit or to trouble shoot your problems; you already had your hand in putting him out of business, don't also insult him by asking for his time and expertise for free.

My response to this tripe:

This is a bunch of crap.

I've always said that I'm willing to pay for my FULL PRESCRIPTION, but don't hold a very simple part of it hostage to keep me in your store so you can force overpriced frames and criminally overpriced lenses on me. You expect gratitude for that?

Want to know who has put the local optician out of business? Luxottica and yes, the local optician herself. The world has always been an adapt or die scenario -- for everyone. So rather than whine about how unfair something is, use your brain and try to figure out how to use your "time and expertise" to turn it around in your favor. The old model no longer works -- and hasn't for some time.

Move on already.

Got this in the inbox yesterday morning. I'd imagine that many of the other bespectacled St. Paulites who received thought, "wow, that's a great deal." In fact as of right now, 221 people have bought into this.

I haven't paid more than $40 for a pair of glasses in years.

I'd bet dollars to donuts, my final price for even my moderate single-vision prescription will be much, much more than the $220 I'd be getting for my $40.

State of the (Online Eyeglasses) Union

It's been a while since the last time I've taken a step back to see how the online eyeglasses market has progressed. There have been a number of very noticeable changes to me in the past year or so.

First, there are fewer big sales happening, which makes me think that things are starting to settle down a bit. The big boys have found their places and a number of the smaller places have either closed up shop or are struggling to keep the lights on.

Another of the trends I've been seeing is that there seem to be fewer problems overall. There was a time when I'd be working with at least a half-dozen people a week to answer questions and get issues ironed out. Those numbers have dropped while the orders have increased. We're definitely seeing many more repeat customers now, and the ones who've had success are bringing the word of online eyeglasses to their friends and families -- and sharing the knowledge they've gained in the process.

One of the things I'm most impressed with in the past twelve to eighteen months is the entry of Warby Parker. It's nice to see some style and class come to the market in the mid-price range. Their site is beautiful and they even offer a monocle if you happen to be Colonel Klink.

All in all, it's a quieter, safer period we're in -- much less wilderness -- but I'd kill for some big deals once in a while.

A bit of a newcomer to the scene has called it a day in the online eyeglasses business.

I received an email the other day regarding Eyeglasses123 and it contained some interesting content:

After careful thought and tedious number crunching, the owners of Eyeglasses123 have decided to shutdown their business...

Apparently (and these are their words) "they cannot keep up with competition and economic pressure."

I liked the prices they had on designer frames, but lens costs kept me from purchasing from them after the first pair.

Working in the yard over the weekend, in between the bouts of rain, it became clear that I need another pair or two of sunglasses to add to the collection. I've never lost a pair of my glasses (save that pair at the bottom of Lake Marion before I bought my prescription swim goggles) but my sunglasses seem to have scattered to the four winds. I have a tendency to leave them places, and while I usually find them, I was only able to find a scratched pair this weekend.

Anyway, there haven't been any BIG DEALS out there in a couple of months, but hoping that changes over the busy summer sales period.

A while back I wrote a review on Eyeglasses123. They're a growing company with a bit of a different spin on the discount eyeglasses market. They specialize in good prices on designer frames. They also have lower-priced house brands -- some of which are bold, very stylish, and hard to find in some of the other stores. I really like the "vintage" pair I got in November -- they're in the regular rotation.

Their pricing structure hasn't matured yet (things have changed a lot in the past 4 months), but their inventory still makes them a solid destination when you have your heart set on a particular designer or distinct style without emptying your savings.

Here are the latest deal they're offering:

35% additional off on glasses in the "Designer Outlet". There are currently about 50 frames in this collection from the following brands: Gucci, Giorgi Armani, Kate Spade, Timberland, Liz Claiborne, Puma, Covergirl, Kenneth Cole, Vera Wang, Harve Benard... Find something in here, add a lens and lop off the 35% of the total. The discount will show up automatically in the cart after you enter shipping info and email.

To give you an idea of what this discount will do for you, I grabbed the first frame in the collection, the Timberland TB5027. Eyeglasses123 has this for $14.95. Add a basic plastic lens for about $30, take 35% off and add about $5 for shipping and you'll get it in a week or so for less than $34. The same exact frame and options at LensCrafters will set you back about $250. FramesDirect, the largest of the online designer eyeglasses store will get them to you for $138.

Eyeglasses123 is the obvious answer in this case.

Eyeglasses123 doesn't have the best prices on Transitions and Polarized lenses, so you'll likely want to look elsewhere (39DollarGlasses offers each lens upgrade option for about $50 -- which is $30 less than the "sale" price at Eyeglasses123 -- but you won't find any designer frames there). Eyeglasses123 also no longer includes the basic lens in the price of the frame, which is a big disappointment.

However, the bottom line remains the same, they're the best site online for a broad selection of designer frame eyeglasses and sunglasses. With the brands listed above and others such as Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Persol, Ray-Ban, Silhouette (the brand that started my whole online eyeglasses odyssey) and Versace, they'll have something for you at a good price.

It's been quite awhile since a retailer approached me with a different approach -- and more importantly a different inventory filled with so many name brand frames.

We're entering a time where it appears that most of the sites have begun to bleed into each other a bit, each borrowing what they assume is working well with the competition. Four years ago today, I started the GlassyEyes site after getting my first two pairs of online eyeglasses and posting about them on my personal blog. It's changed my life. I now have lost count of the pairs I own and the money I've saved. I no longer fret about breaking my glasses and have been able to justify the cost of prescription sunglasses -- a luxury for most.

Through those four years, I've gotten so much help in spreading the word. The forums and comments are rife with helpfulness and sharing. I'm not keen on shouting in an empty room, and this has never been empty -- from day one. You're the ones who've made this what it is. I thank you.

What's next? I'm in the process of evaluating and giving a bit of advice to a couple of new retailers. Updates will appear as my orders are fulfilled. There are more choices now than ever. Quality is improving as retailers learn from past mistakes.

I get some email regularly from people who are looking for deals on a particular name-brand frame. I typically tell them that this is not the point of the glassyeyes blog, but I could be more helpful. There are deals to be had on name-brand frames and one of the places that I know delivers the goods is FramesDirect.

I've had neighbors looking for non-prescription sunglasses and co-workers who just had to have that name brand embossed into the temple. FramesDirect worked for them.

The only reason I bring this up, is that they're having a 3 Day Sale using the aptly-named coupon code "3DaySale". This ends October 1.

The deal is, you get $50-off of frames WITH lens purchase over $109. That's not a tough bar to reach with them -- they're much more expensive than my favorites over to the left, BUT much less expensive than the place at the mall -- with an even larger selection.

The low-down is, you're going to spend $45 or so for basic plastic single vision lenses without UV. You're going to want UV protection for $15. Anti-reflective (AR) coating starts at $45.

If it were me, I'd get something classic, like these Shurons for $92.

Then I'd add the basic plastic lenses, skip the AR (as no one had AR back in the age of Mad Men) and add UV coating. With the $50-off you're looking at about $112 and much, much less than you'd pay elsewhere. I'm sure you can find frames for less as I didn't really want to spend too much time perusing brands I can't stand.

My guess is this will be useful to some of you.

Sales like these do one more thing for me -- they validate the fact that markups are HUGE in eyeglass frames and lenses.

Why don't health insurance companies cover eyeglasses?

Because they've known it's a scam all along -- and scammers are rarely scammed.

Anywhere medicine meets fashion, you're looking at an environment ripe for ridiculous pricing and less than durable products. The moment brand licensing entered the picture this industry lost respectability.

When marketing becomes more important than the product, the product quality inevitably loses out.

Need some more examples to this hypothesis? How about a SpongeBob joke book, or the Chicago Cubs.

What they want you to think is eye insurance is little more than a marketing campaign by the manufacturer/retailer.

If it continues down this path, how long will it be until we can no longer use pre-tax dollars in our health savings accounts to pay for eyeglasses?

The only way this changes is if we vote with our wallets.

The Lion's Club has been recycling eyeglasses and getting them to faces of people in need around the world for many years. They say it costs them $0.08 per pair to rehab them and distribute.

There used to be a time that you could find a Lion's Club box on the top of the cigarette machine at every local supper club and pizzeria -- back when people smoked and were places called supper clubs and pizzerias.

Ahh, those halcyon days of the late 70's.

Nearly everything that was simple and good about the time of my childhood has been replaced by Walmart. This is not an exception.

It only takes one ugly incident to take the starch out of your monthly sales goals. Mess up with someone who has 10,000 followers and the "viral" you've been seeking will happen -- in exactly the opposite way you'd planned. You live and breathe online-only, you don't have the uninformed "walk-up" sales of the mall stores to prop you up. A prominent link to a complaint may live mere pixels from that google ad you're spending so much on.

The vast majority of purchase experiences are wonderful. Concentrate on the others and be responsive!

Prescription sunglasses. I could never afford them when I was getting fleeced by Lenscrafters, and now I'm never without a pair. For as little as $8 more than a non-tinted pair, you're able to go all day in the sun without the eye fatigue and the premature crow's feet.

I carry a pair in my work bag, one in each car and even leave a pair in my bike bag in case I forget to grab a pair on the way out.

They're not just for the (fleeting) days of summer. I find them even more useful in the winter as I head out into the blinding reflections of the sun on the new snow.

I bought a UV meter a couple of years ago to verify that I was getting the lenses and coatings I was paying for. All pairs I've ordered have measured up. Don't forget that UV blocking is inherent in polycarbonate material -- so never pay extra for UV protection with polycarbonate lenses. CR-39 (or regular plastic) lenses need the UV coating.

For me, this is one of the biggest benefits of low-cost online prescription eyeglasses. I spend less per pair than my wife does on non-prescription sunglasses.

There is no reason that that should ever happen with prescription sunglasses prices as low as they are to us online. Find a pair of glasses you like and turn them into sunglasses by adding an 80%+ tint for as little at $8 more. I find myself ordering a pair of sunglasses with almost every order I make -- they're so useful!

Once you have a few pairs, the real issue is making sure they're properly spread out amongst the car, house, bag and even friends houses! My problem today is due to just that -- improper spreading of sunglasses assets. I have three pair in the car and none where I need them -- on my face.

Anyone else have this problem?

Iowa EyeDoc talks of shipping Eyeglasses

Apparently things are changing in the overnight shipping industry. It piqued my interest and led me to this testimonial.

This past-president of the Iowa Optometric Association talking of using FedEx Express to ship glasses around the state of Iowa makes me wonder what the difference is between that happening in Iowa and it happening across state, country borders -- using the same FedEx services.

I can't be sure of this optometrist's stance on "online eyeglasses", but generally I've seen that optometrists seem to have slightly fewer issues with it than the opticians -- which really shouldn't be a surprise as opticians have the most to lose.

I realize that this whole "BrownBailout" campaign is propaganda from FedEx, but I found his comments relevant to the online eyeglasses market.

ED NOTE: The term "propaganda" in it's purest form is not negative, but neutral. I don't know enough about the "UPS Bailout" to have a strong opinion either way at this point.

When you have three boys quickly growing out of toys and clothes you donate to whichever charitable organization has the next truck coming through the neighborhood.

Digging through all of the donation receipts this year for the Vietnam Vets, Goodwill, and Lupus Foundation I wondered to myself, "Self? What about those old glasses?"

I've always known I could drop them in a Lion's Club box at a couple of different doctor's offices and [shudder] optical stores in town, but never considered the tax benefit of doing so.

There are guidelines, but they're loose. I plan on talking to my accountant on Thursday evening to get a better idea, but in the meantime here is a link to some more information on the topic.

New to Online Eyeglasses?

I wrote a quick piece a couple of years ago about what to consider when buying online. The rules haven't really changed during that time, but the process has gotten better. A few of the major players are getting better at dealing with difficulties and prices have stabilized a bit lower than before.

I get thousands of new people visiting the site each week and wanted to highlight the steps to getting a great pair of glasses at prices you never imagined.

Here are those steps again:

Get your eyes checked. This is important from a prescription strength and an eye health perspective. Keep a schedule and get this done annually -- yes, I've changed my tune a bit on this.
Get your full prescription. You paid for it. Make sure you leave with it. If you didn't bring it with you, give them a call. The law says they need to provide you with it.
Get your Pupillary Distance (PD). This isn't a part of your prescription by default. See here for some ideas on getting this measurement. It's important and it's not that difficult to get for a single vision prescription (bi-focal or multi-focals require a bit more expertise).
Get your frame measurements. There are a couple of good ways to do this. I liked my old frame style, so I knew that frames with similar measurements would likely end up being decent looking. If you're looking for something new, find a pair you like at the store and write down the measurements from the frame. In either case, the measurements are typically stamped inside the temple and/or on the bridge.
Find a frame. Hit the websites listed to the left and start browsing. You're looking for sizes as well as style here -- don't forget that! If the site offers a way to drill down to a temple size, for instance, use it! It will save you a ton of time. There is no reason to look at all of the 130mm temple-lengths when you need a 140mm.
Choose your lens options. I was oversold on "featherwates" and hi-index lenses for years. Depending on your prescription strength and the lens size for the frames you're looking at, you may be fine with the standard thickness lenses. I like anti-reflective lenses and I'm amazed at how much I like the photochromic lenses. With the low cost of these glasses, pick up a pair with sunglasses lenses. I don't buy lenses that don't include UV protection -- neither should you.
Order up! Use a credit card (not a debit card) to aid in unlikely event of problematic resolution issues. Pay a couple dollars extra for faster shipping from a number of the retailers.
Wait. This was the hardest part for me -- mostly because I was without a spare pair. It gets easier when you're not in that pinch.

If you follow these steps, you're going to end up (with a MUCH better chance of being) happy. Order from a reputable online retailer and you may just be starting a mutually-beneficial long-term relationship.

So, some of the folks over at Optiboard, aren't exactly showing off their prowess in the ways of the internet. It seems some dude named "Chris" thinks that Lily over at EyeOverheard and I are the same person -- nevermind the 1,200 mile difference (I think she's in Texas or Arizona or something) or the obvious gender inconsistencies.

His "proof" started out being that we both used GoDaddy as our domain registrar when we set up our sites -- that puts us a close-knit group of about 34,000,000. We both use a Domain Proxy Service in Arizona -- the default domain proxy for GoDaddy mind you. I didn't use a Domain Proxy at first, until a psychotic eye doctor from Texas started commenting on my neighborhood and family using the address found in the domain listing.

Anyway, I digress.

I found out about all of this in a direct tweet from @lenschic on Tuesday (have I mentioned how busy I've been this last month). I figured someone would surely set him straight by now and he'd admit he was being an idiot. Nope. Even after someone pointed much of this information out to him, he's decided that the link way down on the bottom of my site, in the blogroll, to EyeOverheard.com is proof enough that she and I are one in the same.

Full disclosure: I think Lily (LensChic) is great (even thought we don't see eye to eye on some things). I love the content and tone of her site and while I don't comment like I used to, I still think it's the most entertaining and informative look into a *very* interesting industry.

Oh, and "Chris"... there's a bit of rule in posting things on the internet. At least Google the terms and things you don't understand before opening your mouth. You'll look like less of an ass in the long-term.

I never intended to take the month of February off from the blog, and technically I didn't between the myriad email I answered, the three production issues I stepped in to deal with and at least one deal I posted in Twitter.

I was approving messages this morning and came across one that I've talked about before but which warrants a bit of a refresher. IT's one of the more common hurdles in talking yourself into buying your first (and there will be more once you've taken the leap) pair of online eyeglasses. I won't hit all of the specifics -- but you can at the original post.

I don't know exactly what it is about my face that makes most glasses look bad, but whatever it is, it's not going away. Maybe it's related to the thing that makes 2 frames with the same measurements fit me in completely different ways - as in, one pair will fit fine and the other won't fit at all.

I can deal with this by trying them on in the store, but - of course - I want to get mine online! So how do I go about doing this?

I felt the same way you did. The fact of the matter is, the style center of the brain starts to wrestle with the economic portion when it sees the $250 price tag dangling from the frame. The result is clouded vision that doesn't allow you to really see the frames. I could *never* find a pair of frames I liked. I'd spend hours in the store -- paralyzed.

Since I started ordering online, I've only gotten three pairs (out of 40ish!) that I wouldn't wear every day, and two of those was purchased on a lark.

They're not expensive. My advice is to use the measurements on a frame you like (concentrate on total width if you can) and find something similar. Order up, maybe at EyeBuyDirect (for 15%-off) and see what you think. If you can't live with them, return them.

My guess is, you'll be surprised how you feel when they arrive.

I love it when I get a visit from the beast. To be honest, I rarely check my daily visitor logs (who has time?), but when I do, one of my favorite views is the "recent visitor map". It never fails to motivate me to continue when I see visitors from all over the planet.

There are a few places that I look specifically, though; the LensCrafters HQ in Ohio and the Mothership di'supremo in Milan, Italy. I got a visit from Cincinnati, this afternoon.

Order Confirmations: What the online eyeglasses industry should learn from my window blinds order

Recently, I stumbled upon an analogue to buying eyeglasses online. I used to think of shoes, but it's not the same. They're mass-produced and I've exchanged as many pairs to Zappos due to size as I've gotten right the first time.

No, this is a custom industry that has at least one company doing some wonderful things in order taking and tracking that could easily be implemented by the online eyeglasses stores -- online window blinds.

How is it similar to online eyglasses? Measurements are very important. If you're off by a half-inch (or even less in some instances), you're left with some nicely-packaged uselessness. I followed the same method of entering my measurements as I would an eyeglasses prescription, and then double and triple checked it against my notes and a re-measurement of the windows before hitting submit.

My order went like this:

I went to SelectBlinds.com.
I found the type of blinds I wanted to order.
I entered my measurements.
I chose the details and extras I wanted for the blinds.
I added them to my cart.
I entered payment information and hit "submit".
My order number appeared on the page along with the order details.
My computer "dinged" at me as an email hit my inbox.
I opened the email and saw something very interesting:
It also had a prominent link to check to status of my order.
I double-checked my entered measurements and clicked "Bypass Hold Time".
Two days later I got another email stating that my blinds had shipped.
Two days (and a half-hour of work) later they were blocking light -- very nicely.

I challenge the online eyeglasses retailers to take this list, do a search and replace on the word "blinds" and pop in "eyeglasses", use their own URL and make this their order process. Give people a chance to verify and if needed fix their own problems. And if they're willing to sign off on their order, let them bypass the "hold time".

Don't hide the status of the order from the customer. Promote the hell out of it. I've never heard of anyone complaining about getting too much information regarding a financial transaction.

Give people the information they crave and you'll do a lot less damage control as people complain about being kept in the dark.

I wish I could say this was the first time I've written on a topic like this. Just over a year ago I stressed much the same thing and it's still not caught on.

Three years? Already?

First off, let me start with a heartfelt "Thank You" to all of you who have helped to make this site as relevant as it is. Your emails, comments, questions, and input are the fuel for all of this. It's been an interesting and fantastic three years and I really appreciate all of your help in passing the message along to others in need.

It's been challenging and at the same time very rewarding to get to read so many emails from people who are able to see through clear (and even tinted) lenses and still be able to afford groceries for the family.

Keep passing it on. It's making a difference. The markets are beginning to change in response to this sharing of knowledge and empowerment.

I bought the site a logo for its "birthday". I'd expect to see it soon on new business cards, stickers and maybe a t-shirt or two in the coming weeks.

I also tried to respond to as many of the suggestions as I could about the site design. The two most prevalent questions I've gotten are "Where do I start?" and "What are the best deals?" (check the news scroller at the top and the extended listings on the customary left side), so I tried to highlight those two areas in the design of GlassyEyes 3.0. It's not that I don't like answering the questions, but I bet you'd rather not have to ask. I value your time and know that I don't necessarily enjoy digging for information that should be plainly visible.

From a strictly personal sense, the biggest news is the new site is going live tomorrow. I'm going to be busy putting together the finishing touches all day. I've got a full pot of coffee, finished watching the season finale of Mad Men during breakfast, put the full-time gig on hold for the day, and the kids are at school until 3PM. Here we go!
